![]() ![]() The formerly gung-ho Don (Ignacio Serricchio) is a wisecracking mercenary, though he can still be counted on in the crunch. More radical are the changes to the nonfamily members. (It’s startling, for a 2018 ensemble drama, that the show has no demonstrably gay character.) Diversity is served by the biracial Judy, now a half sister. That confidence has been transferred to his older sisters, Penny (Mina Sundwall) and Judy (Taylor Russell). Young Will Robinson (Maxwell Jenkins) is still a pint-size savior, coming up with last-minute solutions to deadly problems, but he’s gone emo, without the breezy self-assurance of the original Will. #LOST IN SPACE SERIES#Maureen Robinson (Molly Parker) is a brilliant scientist and the family alpha - no more doing the interstellar laundry - though it’s not a total feminist victory, because the father now gets to be both the action hero and the more empathetic parent. Netflix announces their hit science fiction series Lost in Space is coming back for another season in 2021, but it will be the shows last. So the Robinson marriage is now troubled, and John Robinson (Toby Stephens) is an absent father who’s returned for the voyage to Alpha Centauri. Smith and a large robot that likes to say “danger.” But turning a square-jawed, morally uncomplicated adventure into something more contemporary - culturally sensitive domestic melodrama - requires a lot of tweaks. The new “Lost in Space,” set in 2048, keeps the old show’s central dynamic: The Robinsons, mother, father and three children, have adventures in space with the flyboy Don West, the eccentric Dr. A decent plot twist in the 10th episode sets up the second season that will likely follow, unless Netflix decides to stop underwriting the passably good special effects. ![]() There's an awful lot of sci-fi clichés - if you were wondering if they might try something to get out of danger that's crazy but just might work, you would be correct - but this remake is lots of fun, and a great whole-family viewing choice for sci-fi fans.Things subside pretty quickly, though, and the balance of the season is a formulaic and increasingly sentimental family drama. Smith (though fans of the original may miss Jonathan Harris' camp-classic delivery of his trademark tongue-twisting insults). #LOST IN SPACE MOVIE#The new Lost in Space has also made a number of pivotal character shifts that are an improvement on both the original and the 1998 movie remake of it: Penny and Judy are younger, and John and Maureen are given meaty backstories of their own instead of being asked to play heroic stereotypes, and Parker Posey makes a terrific gender-flipped Dr. These characters feel, act, and sound like actual people, which makes watching them struggle through otherworldly trials quite the thrill. Will, newly crash-landed on a mysterious planet, perches atop an icy hill and looks at the enormous snowy mountains that surround him, letting out one breathy "Wow." And we feel it too: the horror of being lost in a strange place, the thrill of leaving everything safe and secure to explore new frontiers. One of the things this series gets right (and the original never did) is the sheer grandeur of space travel. #LOST IN SPACE FULL#Zippy, zesty, and full of classic cliffhanger-style suspense, this remake of the 1960s series of the same name is much better than it has to be. ![]()
